Social Media and Teens

The Relationship

Social media and teenagers seem to be a perfect match. Digital media is always changing, and it gets the attention and interaction from teens. Social media is always starting trends and introducing new cutting-edge technology. It has introduced short form videos and websites like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok. It has established ways for individuals to make money off posting videos and reviewing products. It also has incorporated the use of users altering their videos and pictures through interactive filters. Digital media builds community. It brings people together from all walks of life and cultures. Digital media has been incorporated in the classroom. Students can share their work with their peers and their teachers. Digital Media and social media have its ups and downs. It is forever evolving, and teenagers are evolving with them.

Digital media and its connection to teenagers and social media has been a journey. Before the internet became a big thing, teenagers relied on watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading teen magazines. Once the internet was released to the public, the internet started with a dial up connection. This introduced websites like MySpace. Facebook was formed because of MySpace. This platform saw the start of teenagers engaging in digital media. The release of smartphones completely changed the game. This opened the door for people to be able to access the internet through their phone. Now people can shoot films, create and post videos, take pictures and stream movies all from a phone. Teenagers are always going to have a hand in the future of digital media. They are always pushing boundaries and starting trends in their effort to express who they are.

The ugly side of teens and social media

The Challenges

Teens face different challenges when it comes to social media use. They come in contact with cyber bullying, self identity/self esteem issues and online predators just to name a few.
